After 4 seasons as the Vice President, Erica Kjekstad is stepping down from the Victoria Junior League executive board. Erica has been with the VJFHA executive since 2011. We would like to take this opportunity to thank her for hard work and for dedicating countless hours on and off the field. Erica’s work on marketing and communications has lifted our association to a new level.

After many years as the association’s Treasurer, Bill Moffat is stepping down from the board. We would like to thank Bill for his many years of valuable advice and responsible financial book-keeping. Bill has given many hours to our association and ensured that all legal and financial items are carefully considered when conducting business.

Needless to say, there are two very key vacancies on the Victoria Junior Field Hockey Association (VJFHA) Board of Directors for this upcoming season. This is a great opportunity to get involved in the field hockey community. For parents, you will have a direct hand in shaping the association to benefit all children in our sport. For younger adults, this is a great way to acquire some professional development in a volunteer organization. Both Bill and Erica will be available for consultation as we get up to the new volunteer up to speed. We look forward to having YOU on the board!

Due to the recent opening of the new Centre for Athletics, Recreation and Special Abilities (CARSA), we would like to notify all members that access and amenities for the UVic Field 1 (Artificial Water-based Turf) and Field 2 (Rubber-Based Turf) has changed. Please take note of the below points for your games and practices at the University of Victoria.

UVIC FIELD 1 AND 2 ACCESS
Access is now at the NORTH corner of the pitch (closest to CARSA) which is also the former entrance prior to the CARSA construction

BATHROOMS
_There are now indoor, public bathrooms that are accessible from outside. These bathrooms are located on the north end of the Field 2A and you can enter the doors into CARSA from the outside of the building. There is a men’s and women’s bathroom with a few stalls in each. These bathrooms should be open for all field rentals. There is also bathrooms in the lobby through the main entrance of CARSA, however, teams are encouraged to use the public bathrooms accessible near Field 2.

PARKING
There are the 3 places you can park to access Field 1 and 2:
1. Parking Lot 2 (the McKinnon Building lot) accessible from Gabriola Road (via McKenzie Ave. or Ring Road)
2. The NEW CARSA Parkade (5 levels) accessible from Vikes Way off McKenzie Ave.
3. The CARSA open Gravel parking lot accessible from Vikes Way off McKenzie Ave just before you enter the parkade (on the right)

Pay parking is in effect on Monday through Saturday 24 hours a day. There is no charge for parking on Sunday or statutory holidays except at the Ian Stewart Complex and University Centre parkade where pay parking is in effect 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Below are the parking rates for the above mentioned parking options:
$1.50 per hour or portion
$8.00 daily maximum until 11:59 pm
$2.50 evening maximum from 6:00 pm – 11:59 pm
$2.50 maximum for Saturday
$32.00 weekly permit valid 7 days from date and time of purchase

UVic Intramurals has replaced the long-time 7-aside league that used to run on Thursday nights. This league is open to community members and UVic students/staff and is co-ed. You can register as an individual and be placed on a team or you can register a team and pick your friends to play with!

The Rebels Field Hockey Executive have released a job posting in search of a Master Club Coach. This position is foundational to a coaching and player development model approved by the Rebels FHC Executive in 2015. This model has been employed by other clubs, both within hockey, and within other sports/codes. The overall outcome that the role is intended to support is to increase participation in the club; both the number of players, as well as the level of engagement of players and other participants between teams.

Practically, there are 2 distinct functions:
1. To support an integrated approach to coaching and player development/movement with each of the 5 team’s coaches and captains (3 women’s teams, and 2 men’s teams); and
2. To coach the women’s first division team (games and practices).

The Rebels FHC Executive are looking to successfully introduce a new culture and structure to the club. As such, there is a desire to enter into an agreement of up to 3 years, recognizing that to achieve sustainable change, will require multiple years.

It is expected that the individual and Rebels FHC executive will meet at least on an annual basis to assess the achievement of objectives, and to validate approach/commitment for the following year.

• The applicant must provide a letter outlining experience and skills (against qualifications listed on the attached description). This is to be brief (2 pages maximum).

The University of Victoria is currently home to a 11-day training camp for the Canadian Junior National women’s program. Several islanders including second-year Vike Lindsay Cole (Lynx 1) and soon-to-be rookie Vike Alexis De Armond (Lynx 1) are kitting up in the red and white this week to not only live in UVic dorms but to also experience a fully centralized, national team experience.

The camp runs from Aug. 10-21 and includes a series of games, fitness testing, position-specific training, team activity and excursions such as whale watching through the connection of former Vike Sarah Angus and Prince of Wales Whale Watching. Over 40 athletes were invited, however just 32 athletes are in attendance. The UVic campus will be home to lots of competitive hockey this year as the Vikes are hosting the CIS women’s field hockey national championship, Nov. 5-8.

“The camp is a selection opportunity for our Junior World Cup qualifying squad,” said Steph Andrews, head coach of the junior womenn’s program. “We are going to Chile in January for a three-week training camp and the qualifier is in March. After Chile we will bring it down to 18 so, it’s a really good development opportunity for the young ones.”

Mount Douglas Secondary grads Cole and De Armond are joined by a slew of island youngsters who have university hockey on their minds in the near future including Cowichan Secondary Shool’s Robin Fleming (Flickers), Sara Goodman (Flickers) and Brittany Smith (Lynx 1), as well as St. Michael’s University School’s Anna Mollenhauer (Lynx 1), daughter of former Vike and Olympian Nancy Mollenhauer.

“You can’t beat having girls centralized for a good period of time and staying together from a culture point of view and for the girls getting to know each other,” adds Andrews. “The facilities have been unreal and UVic has been really accommodating. It’s really important to get around the country to our big pockets to coordinate and develop professional development opportunities for coaches in that area and bring people out to watch and advertise our program in different areas not just in Vancouver.”

The remaining of the camp includes games Aug. 18 (1:00 p.m.) and Aug. 21 (7:00 am), as well as some final team meetings and training sessions before athletes depart Friday morning.

“Exciting,” was all rookie De Armond could say about the potential to represent Canada. “It’s always been a dream of mine to play for Canada so hopefully it will come true. It’s a longer camp than we are used to but it’s fun because there are a lot of games and lots of room for improvement.”

The Vikes will look to continue to build off their 2015 CIS bronze medal win in Toronto and with Cole and De Armond tasting the national team water, the team should also benefit from the return of current senior national team members Rosie Beale (Lynx 1), of Claremont Secondary, and Kathleen Leahy (Lynx 1), of Oak Bay High.

To add to the mix, former Vikes goalkeeper and current senior national team keeper Kaitlyn Williams was on site to work with the junior keepers.

“It’s awesome to have this camp here and the facilities at UVic have always been good so it’s so nice to be able to spread (the program) out,” adds Williams, a former Canada West Goalkeeper of the Year and 2008 CIS national champion. “I remember when we hosted CIS nationals (at UVic) and it was so exciting to have so much home town support and to host the games on your own field is unbelievable. I’m sure the girls will experience the same kind of excitement.”

The junior national team members will be on site at the University of Victoria water-based pitch from 1:00-3:00 p.m. on Aug. 18, 9:00-11:00 a.m. and 1:00-3:00 p.m. on Aug. 20 and 7:00-9:00 a.m. on Aug. 21.
